KIDS AND ADDED SUGARS:  HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Did you know that children and teens should consume less than six teaspoons of "added sugars" a day and drink no more than eight ounces of sugary beverages a week, according to the American Heart Association's first ever scientific statement recommending specific sugar limits for kids.

A panel of researchers took a deep look at how sugar impacts cardiovascular health between the ages of 2 and 18.  Their statement also said children younger than 2 shouldn't have any added sugars, but instead have nutrition-packed diets for growing healthy brains and bodies.

Studies linking added sugars and conditions that lead to cardiovascular disease --THE NO. 1 CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE WORLD - have been around for years.  Diets high in added sugars have been connected to heart risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels.

The typical American child eats about TRIPLE the recommended amount of added sugars, half from food and half from drinks, said Dr. Miriam Vos, who is also author of the book, "The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids."

Added sugars have a host of names on food ingredient labels, such as high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, fruit juice and more. Sugar isn't just in cakes and cookies but also in Chinese chicken salad, barbecue sauce, hamburger buns, and salad dressings.

This information was published in the News Herald by the American Heart Association News. If you would like a copy of this article, you can obtain it from the News Herald or email me at tomharriet@aol.com with your address and email address and I will send it to you. We need to help educate parents about what is happening with the food industry.  Just because your child loves Brand X Cereal loaded with marshmallows or M & Ms does not mean it is good for him or her.

CAN YOUR CELL PHONE CAUSE CANCER?  (CONTINUED PAGE 2)

Don't use your cell phone in metal surroundings such as a bus, train, airplane or elavator. Using phone creates radiation "hot spots" that increase exposure.  OK to us cell phone in a car if  your phone is hooked into the car's Bluetooth system.

Trade in the cordless phone.  Cordless phones and wireless routers that use a technology called DECT emit as much radiation as cell phones whether you are using them or not.  At home, install telephones that get their signal by being plugged into a jack.  Forward your cell phone to your landline whenever you are home.

Do not be alarmed!  This is information that can protect your family.  Posted to my website: healthyhabitstoday.net

CAN YOUR CELL PHONE CAUSE CANCER?

You may have heard that cell phones have been linked to cancer but wondered if that could really be true.  A new study offers strong evidence that this IS the case- cell phones and other wireless devices emit a type of microwave radiation termed radiofrequency radiation (RFR) that can cause brain cancer and other cancers.

This information is from Devra Davis, PhD, MPH, president of Environmental Health Trust.  Also former sr. advisor to the Assist. Secretary for health in the Dept. of Healt and Human Services.  Author of Disconnect: The Truth about Cell Phone Radiation.

Space will not allow the length of this article that appeared in Bottom Line Personal, Aug. 1, 2016.  Article discussed the scientific studies on toxins to see how they might affect health of Americans. More than 90 studies show that the radiation emitted by cell phones and other wireless devices can damage DNA, the first step on the road to cancer.  Studies did reveal  that on animals exposed to daily, frequent doses of cell phone radiation from birth developed GLIOMA, a rare aggressive type of brain cancer already linked to cellphone use in people. There were other types of tumors mentioned in this article.

More dangers: Meningioma, cancer in protective coverings that surround the brain.
Salivary gland tumors,  Acoustic neuroma, Breast cancer, tucking cell phones into their bras for up to 10 hours a day for several years,  Male infertility and potency, wearing cell phone on the hip or using a laptop computer on the lap, Sleeping problems, cell phone users in the hours before bedtime have more trouble falling asleep and staying asleep.

How to protect yourself:  Devices to be concerned about include cell phones, cordless phone handsets and bases, Wi-Fi routers, wireless computers, laptops, iPads and other tablets, smart watches, wireless fitness bands, iPods that connect to the internet, wireless speakers, cordless baby monitors, wirelesss game consoles and any other type of wireless device or equipment such as thermostats, security networks, sound systems and smart meters.

Keep devices at a distance - Never put phone next to your heard. Use a speaker phone function or an earpiece.
Never place turned on device in a pocket or jacket or tucked into clothing.  Keep laptops and tablets off your lap.
Never fall asleep with your cell phone or wireless tablet in bed or under your pillow.  People fall asleep streaming radiation into their bodies.
Turn it off -  Put phone in airplanemode to stop radiation.  (To be continued.)

HEALTHY SKIN STARTS WITH SUN PROTECTION!

You probably already wear a sunscreen when you're at the beach, by the pool or just walking around on a hot summer day -- but is it enough! How about working in the yard or maybe just walking to your car on a cloudy day.

The sun's rays do not escape you whether you are working near a window, driving to school or work in the morning.  What about just sitting under a tree at the park or in your yard.

Make sunscreen part of your daily routine.  Many sunscreens can be applied under makeup--or choose a daily moisturizer that includes sun protection.  Shaklee's SPF 30 lotion for the body does the job for you.  Can be worn under makeup or alone.

Common routines can add up to 20 hours of UV exposure each week so you definitely need to use a sunscreen.  Apply sunscreen before you go out in the sun--takes about 15 minutes for you skin to absorb the sunscreen.  Reapply often, especially after swimming, perspiring or using a towel.  Sunscreens should not be used to increase the time you spend in intense sunlight.

The amount of sunscreen needed to cover the body (1 oz.) is about the size of a golf ball.  Studies show most people apply only 25% to 50 % of the recommended amount of sunscreen. Make sure you choose a high SPF that will cover you completely.

Happy sunny days!  Enjoy the activities that go along with summer just make sure you wear your sunscreen!  For more information, visit www.healthyhabitstoday.net*

EIGHT KEYS TO HAPPINESS!!

Happiness:  It's a simple word that we all desire.

This information was from an article by Jonathan Long, CEO, Market Domination Media.  I did add number one so really it is 9 keys to Happiness. Enjoy:

1. Develop a Great Attitude - It's up to you whether the glass is half full or half empty.

2. Envision the very best - If you want something in life, the first step is to envision it. You will never achieve a goal no matter what you are going after in life: career change, personal relationship, business opportunity or the courage to see those goals happening and believe in yourself.

3. Understand that there is no such thing as perfection - None of us live in a perfect world.  If you think that striving for perfection is so important, you will be running in circles and eventually become disappointed.  Individuals have flaws and business is filled with ups and downs.  So, seek out  GREATNESS, not PERFECTION!!

4. Learn to listen to your gut and heart - We have to make difficult decisions on a daily basis, both in our personal lives and in our heart.  Remember, it is your decisions, not anyone elses.

5. Find your purpose - It is much easier to discover your inner happiness when you get to do something every day for other reasons besides monetary ones.   Many people are happy because they are part of a bigger picture.

6. Surround yourself with other happy people - Relationships in our personal and professional lives fail when there is a toxic individual that is around us.  Someone who makes you smile in your personal life, and build your business with people who are happy is contagious but so is toxicity, so be wise when choosing whom you surround yourself with.

7. Make time for the things and people you love - Time is our most valuable asset, and none of us can buy more of it.  What we can do is be around the things and people we love.  Set aside time for your hobbies and personal escapes that you hold close to your heart.  You will find your inner happiness after releasing your idea that materialistic possessions or the amount of your wealth is the most important.

8. Realize that you are indefinable - There is only one person with the ability to determine what you can do and if you want others to define who you are is just let them.  We all get to define our own existence.  So, take charge and become the person you want to be and happiness will be "beaming" just like mine.

9. Don't point the blame at anyone else - You must have the shoulders to make the necessary changes.  It is not anyone else's responsibility of what is happening in your life.  You are the one who made your choices not anyone else.  You will find inner happiness much sooner  when you 'fess up that you are responsible.

SURPRISING BRAIN BOOSTER!

Do you like to travel?  Are you one of those people who never needs a good reason to pack your bags?  Here is the reason to hit the road!  Your brain will love it!

Did you want to know why?  The brain's ability to grow, know as  " PLASTICITY"never stops

When you take in new sights and information--walking unfamiliar streets, admiring the scenery and listening to and speaking unfamiliar languages--the brain forms new NEURONS and connections.  It literally gets bigger and more vibrant, explains Dr. Paul Nussbaum, PhD, a clinical neuropsychologist and president of the Brain health Center, BrainHealthCtr.com in Wexford, Pennsyslvania.

You may also get a boost in creativity. Research that looked at fashion executives found that those who had lived abroad created products that were consistently more creative than those produced by their stay-at-home peers.

We know not everyone has the time or the cash or the inclination for exotic vacations.  That's OK.  Your brain will also be happy with a stimulating "STAYCATION."

THE TRICK:  Do ANYTHING that isn't routine.  Go on weekend road trips! Visit that museum you've always been meaning to see.  Introduce yourself to someone whom you've been tempted to talk to but never did.  Get creative to do something new!

If you can travel, go ahead and book those tickets.  Even when the trip is over, you''ll hopefully have photos to remind you of your adventures and memories to share with others. Remembering stimulates the same neurochemistry as the experience itself.  Your brain wants to be stimulated, and reliving your travels is yet another great way to do it.

Now we will wish you Bon Voyage and how about Happy Trails to you!  Your brain needs to be stimulated.  What a great way to do it!  Travel and experience new ideas and new ventures.

HOW CAN YOU GET AN ECO-FRIENDLY KITCHEN??

As a responsible homeowner, and as a homeowner who is constantly looking for ways to cut the cost of energy, you  are likely seeking out approaches to help make your home more eco-friendly.  Whether it is an increased emphasis on recycling or purchasing products that are more sustainable, there are numerous ways to help reduce your impact on the environment and save money also.

If your kitchen is overdue for an overhaul, you can implement the same logic. You can ensure your kitchen will be one of the most eco-friendly rooms in your home, all the while helping it to look contemporary and aesthetically pleasing.  Here are a few tips:

Look to the lights - Cut down on energy costs and be more efficient by considering the kind of lighting.  Consider LED lightbulbs, they use as much as 75% less energy than incandescent lights and last up to 25 times longer.  LED lights are ideal for lighting countertops as well as for recessed downlights.

Be materialistic - When you add cabinets, countertops, tables or flooring, consider the kinds of materials you are utilizing. Specifically bamboo, scrap wood, cork, recycled composite and natural fabrics.  For countertops, butcher-block material made specifically from trees that are harvested sustainably or recycled aluminum tiling finished with a stain-resistant and nontoxic powder coat and sealed with latex.

Energy Star Appliances -  You simply need to look for appliances that have earned Energy Star certification.  The Energy Star program, created by the U.S. EPA identifies those appliances that offer more efficiency on the whole.  ES certified refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers are guaranteed to save you more money and reduce your impact on the environment. Check out the website:  http://energystar.gov

Incentivize recycling -  It is important not only to consider recycled materials in building your kitchen but also to emphasize continued recycling well after it is completed.  When shopping for groceries, always favor products that create less waste that would wind up in landfills.  In your kitchen have accessible and readily-apparent recycling stations.  HGTV.com recommends under counter recycling stations or portable recycling cabinets for these purposes.

There are numerous steps you can take to ensure that your kitchen is one of the greenest rooms in your home.  Consider these ideas as well as others that can help you use less energy and save more money.

Don't forget those kitchen cleaners you are using!  Try the Shaklee brand for the Scour off (replaces scouring powder which is caustic) which is derived from ground cherry pits.  Have cleaner pots and pans, sinks to name a few.  No more rough hands, very gentle!  For your dishwasher, Shaklee has Dish Washer Automatic Powder Concentrate, bio-degradable.  More than 1 and 1/2 times as effective on filming than Seventh Generation.  Economical takes less than Cascade Complete Powder which will need 1 and a half 45 oz. boxes to clean 48 loads compared to Shaklee Dish Washer Powder's one box.

We cannot forget Basic H2, organic super cleaning concentrate.  All purpose in the kitchen and home.  No rinse, no residue.  Window cleaner - 2 drops to 16 oz. of water. All purpose - 1/4 tsp. to 16 oz. of water.  Degreaser - 1-1/4 tsp. to 16 oz. of water.  Very economical.  1 - 16 oz. Basic H2 equals 5,824 bottles of 26 oz. Windex.

Happy Kitchen cleaning makes for a Happy Homemaker!   More information, visit our website, healthyhabitstoday.net

HOW TO TREAT YOUR SOCKS AND STOCKINGS WITH RESPECT!!!

Did I get your attention?  One of Marie Kondo's books, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up, has some interesting suggestions about getting organized.

Have you and your family mastered the art of tidying up?  Do you enjoy your tidy spaces??
How about your sock drawer?   Mine is always a disaster BUT I am going to take Marie's suggestions on learning how to fold your socks.

Do not tie your pantyhose in a knot!!   No, No. Lay the toes on top of the other and fold the stocking in half lengthwise.  Then fold into thirds, make sure toes are inside not outside, and waistband protrudes slightly at the top.  Roll stocking up toward waistband.  If the waistband is on the outside when you finish, you've done it right.

Fold knee-high stockings the same way.  With thicker material, such as tights, it is easier to roll if you fold them in half rather than in thirds.  The point is that the stocking should be firm and stable when you've finished, much like a sushi roll.

I did try this with my short socks, not knee highs and guess what?  It works, put them in the drawer like a sushi roll and you can fit alot of socks  into that drawer.

Thank you, Marie Kondo, for some wonderful suggestions on socks! Can't wait to read your book.  www.healthyhabitstoday.net   Harriet

"EAT A FROG DAILY'

Author Brian Tracy's advice, drawing on the old saying,
"If the first thing you do when you wake up each morning
is eat a live frog, nothing worse can happen for the rest of
the day."
If you eat your frog (YOUR DREADED TASK) first, it
will give you energy and momentum for the rest of the
day.
Imagine how much you would accomplish if you ATE A
FROG to start each day.  Great advice, Brian!!!

CARPET SOLUTION FOR SPRING!

Now that winter has been fighting its entryway  into your home, your floors have probably taken a beating throughout this season.  Jabro Carpet One Floor & Home gave some ideas on protecting your home's floors.

Sarah D'Ziurman advises to use entry mats.  A rug or mat at the entrance of your home will help keep floors dry and lessen the amount of salt that creeps onto your floors.  REMOVE your shoes as soon as you enter your home.  A side note:  in Hawaii and some of the other countries, you always remove your shoes when entering, a courtesy to the host but also a good health practice.

Sarah also adds, " Keep your floors dry and clear of salt and soil.  Dry the floors immediately and make sure you vacuum or sweep up any salt or soil that may have made its way into your home.  Happy cleaning to make life easier!

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

A little food for thought or maybe I should say a little Shamrock Shake for thought?  Have you every thought what the ingredients were in a MacDonald's Shamrock Shake?  I know I really did not pay too much attention to this but you may want to be aware of some of the ingredients.

To begin, 820 calories, 23 grams of fat, 15 grams of saturated fat, 1 gram of trans fat and 115 grams of sugar (quantities provided for large shake).  Now for the ingredients and I am not going to list all due to space availability.   Artificial colors, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavor, sodium benzoate, Polysorbate 80.  These are negative ingredients and studies have shown that artificial food colors have caused adverse behavioral reactions such as hyperactivity and immune reactive disorders.

It's time for a better option, one that is still tasty but also offers "super" nutrition.  The Healthy Shamrock Shake Smoothie.  To receive the recipe, go to our website: www.healthyhabitstoday.net and leave your information.  Happy St. Patrick's Day and don't drink too many of the Shamrock Shakes unless it is a Healthy one.

What is Love?

My husband and I went to see a play about love, Who am I this Time? and it was very thought provoking.  We all think about love and think it is the best thing in the world and it is.  There are all kinds of love.

We won't be able to discuss all kinds but let's pick just the love between a man and a woman.  When I met my husband at Wayne St. University, I never dreamed I would marry him.  He was just a really nice person and we became friends.  We have been together a number of years and people do ask how have you stay married so long.  Well, fall in love with a good friend and then you can overlook some of the things that may disturb you. LOL

If love weren't such a big issue in our world, why do so many people search for it? Maybe if we all realize that there are no perfect people to be married to, we would not have so many breakups and hate to say it,  but unhappy children.  Marriage is a challenge and I don't want to say Marriage is hard but it is.  There is an old saying, The grass is always greener on the other side, but remember it needs to be mowed.  Love is here to stay!

See the play at the Open Book Theatre,  Who am I this Time?  It was excellent. Visit their website: www.openbooktc.com   Playing another weekend of March 19,  2016.

YEAH! CONGRATULATIONS TO ME! GOOD JOB, GIRLFRIEND!

Today is the day after the 5 day DeTox Program that I went on.  This is such an experience that I am so glad I did this.

The reason for the Congrats to myself is this is the FIRST TIME I have gone on a program dealing with food that I actually stayed on it without eating the illegal (as WW called this) stuff.  I do feel wonderful and admittedly there were times when I thought a little different.

My symptoms of this Detox were mild; a little headachey at times, a little more tired at times and a little irritable the last two days.  You may remember that when people in the past wanted to do a fast or detox, they would spend time meditating, reading, RESTING, and really taking it easy.  That is unknown to Americans who like to be busy all the time.  I did continue to do my exercise program (mainly walking and biking), working here at home on my business and at Tom's business. So really I didn't do alot of the resting but did go to bed early.
When the last day came, yesterday, I was so excited when I stepped on the scale (only weigh once a week always, do not do it more, it will make you very ANXIOUS) and it registered,
4 lbs. lost.  Yeah!  Measured myself, this is what you go on the Shaklee program, you know the usual spots.  Bust lost 1/2 inch, Waist lost 1 inch, Hip lost 1/2 inch.  Hallelujah!  One thing we all must remember in losing weight, think of what a pound of fat looks like; well, you may not think of it as a lot but it really is.  Our weight comes on, 1 LB. AT A TIME!  and it is lost 1 LB. AT A TIME!

I am committed to losing the last 10 lbs. in the next 8 to 10 weeks.  I remember when I had this fantastic bathing suit, it was so cute.  Like a sailor design, top was white with buttons down the front, a navy blue bottom with cutouts on each side. Also trimmed on the top with red.   Now, I may not be able to wear a bathing suit like this again but I want to wear a bathing suit that my  " love handles" won't be so obvious. LOL.  This has been such an experience and I would do this once a year in the Spring just to keep my body a little cleaner inside! Visit my website: www.smart-money.myshaklee.com and hope you enjoy this on my personal website!  Have a wonderful week!!

WHY WOULD YOU DO A "HEALTHY BODY CLEANSE"?

Today is my second day of my DeTox Program.  I have wanted to do this for a very long time and now is the time.  Really wanted to see how my body would react to this.

The benefits are:  Boost in energy usually the third day.  (Have one more day to get that energy)

Better concentration and focus ( that's good, usually the third day)

Improved digestion (we can all use this and throw away those antacids)

Many experience a new GLOW to the skin and eyes (hey, I'm open to a glow, right?)

Enhanced ability to better Absorb essential nutrients (I'm for more ABSORPTION)

Cravings for sugar, caffeine, fats and nicotine REDUCED! (Sugar is the big one for me)

Hormonal system RETURNING TO BALANCE.  (This is good)

Healthier Immune system (fewer colds and flu, this is good)

MAXIMIZED bowel regularity (May not be important but when it stops, we are in TROUBLE)

Reduced APPETITE!  (This really excites me)

More RESTFUL sleep (That's good although I do have to say I sleep like a baby and maybe a
15 min. nap during the day if possible, love it!)

An ongoing CRAVING for vegetables

This is the big one and why I am doing this:  I am committing to losing 10 lbs. and this is KICK-STARTING WEIGHT LOSS with real RESULTS in FIVE DAYS!

ARE YOU AS ACTIVE AS YOU THINK YOU ARE?

Taken from an article by Rashelle Brown, Twin Cities Public TV:  Do you consider yourself active and productive most days of the week?  Do you meet the recommended minimum of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week?

A Gallup poll asked individuals, In the last seven days, on how many days did you exercise for 30 or more minutes?  If a respondent did so on 3 or more days of the past seven, he or she is a considered a frequent exerciser.

Most of us lead what we consider to be busy lives and use adjectives like "running around" or running errands."  But if we pay closer attention, we find we're not as active as we thought.

Too much sedentary time is correlated with higher rates of cancer, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, independent of exercise.  This means even if you log 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every week and if the rest of  your waking minutes are spent sitting, you are still at risk.

Want an answer, can't give you all but have a few suggestions from Ms. Brown.  The 1 for 1 Rule requires you to stand, walk or exercise one minute for every minute you spend sitting.  Of course, this requires you to actually pay attention to how long you sit and it may also require you to make modifications to your home or work environment.  Put your TV in a place you can watch while standing or even better walking on a treadmill or pedaling a stationary cycle is one way to slash sedentary minutes.  Working at a stand-up desk or holding walking meetings are a couple of others.

You can also use an inactivity timer.  You can set a wearable activity tracker  to alert you when you've been inactive for too long. Or set the timer on your phone or computer to vibrate or ding every hour or more often.

These are some suggestions to get you moving in the right direction or do I say become more active than you think you are!!

WHAT TO DO WITH USED GREETING CARDS!
Do you have any used greeting cards, maybe from Christmas?  What do you do with them?  I get so frustrated with the beautiful cards and what to do with them.

Well, get ready for this.  I found a place where you can send a variety of items to them for craft purposes but there is a bigger picture to this organization. This group helps to motivate learning and thinking.  A big help to children.  The group is the Reusable Resources Adventure Center in Melbourne, FL.  You can visit their website and view all of the different items they utilize. What a great way to get rid of some of the stuff we all collect and eventually throw away.

It may cost a few dollars to send it to this helpful organization but it is well worth it.  The website is  www.reusecenterbrevard.org  They are also supported by Dr. Drew's Toys, Inc., Kiwanis Club of
Melbourne, Wells Fargo Bank, and members and business community.  Help this group out and you know you will be helping our children.  Remember the children are our future!
