Chances are if you are contemplating a New Year's Resolution, shedding those extra pounds is at the top of your list, according to a Marist Poll.

The best time to make a weight loss commitment is sooner rather than later, according to Dr. Pamela Peeke, chair of the Jenny Craig Science Advisory Board who is sharing four good reasons to make a pre-New Year's Resolution.

1. You'll love your holiday photos. How often have you avoided pictures because you didn't feel good about being in front of the camera? So often people will avoid picture taking because they weren't happy with their weight. Make a commitment now and you can feel healthier and more confident during the holidays and have the photos to remember those special moments.

2. You'll be more proactive and procrastinate less. You are waiting until January to start a weight loss program but you may be just delaying the inevitable. To wait can set you up for procrastination and procrastination may actually be harmful according to the Association for Psychological Science, causing higher levels of stress and lower well-being. Resolve to start losing weight now before the holiday madness begins and while you have the drive and momentum that you want to do this. Motivation is the KEY when it comes to preparing the psyche for any behavior change says Dr. Peeke.

3. Starting Now Means a different Resolution in January. Begin your weight loss journey now can give you the confidence to tackle a different resolution in January. Make a realistic New Year's Resolution. You want to lose 10 lbs. just set a realistic goal instead of trying to do it in a week or two. Remember, weight came on 1 lb. at a time and that is the way it comes off. Motivation is the key that will help with your next challenge. A side note, eating many sugary sweets such as those extra Christmas cookies and candy can lead to really feeling low energy, blah, and affecting your mood. This has been proven so why do you want to overindulge.

4. The Time is Right. Many Americans start the holiday season with Halloween and then it is three months of overindulgence. The average American starts to gain weight around Thanksgiving, with weight gain peaking around the December holidays or the New Year and it can take up to 5 months to lose it according to Cornell University's Food & Brand Lab. If you can adopt healthy habits BEFORE the holidays, you may counteract these effects to gain less or even maintain your weight during the holidays. Instead of waiting until 2020 to make changes, get a head start on your resolution and your journey to better health. Information from StatePoint Media
A VERY PERSONAL MESSAGE THAT MAY RELATE TO SOME!

How do we become the people we are today? What did we go through during our growing
up? Have you every wondered why we are the way we are?

My childhood was somewhat difficult but you know everybody grows up with something. My parents did the best they could and I was probably a little bit of a rebellious spirit. I did love school but had a problem with always comparing myself to somebody. Why wasn't I prettier, Why wasn't I smarter, Why wasn't I shorter, etc. The list goes on and on.

When you have these things running in your head, maybe you can become a little confused?
Getting to my personal message which was my weight. I always thought I was too heavy and
even when I got to my goal weight, I still thought I was heavy. Isn't that dumb?

Today I found a program that has helped me so much. A Cleanse program that made me
eat only the right fruits and veggies and drink plenty of purified water with also some
supplements a.m. and p.m. Guess what? Since I have come off the Cleanse and now eating
clean food and eliminating the non-nutritional food (that's what I call sugar products) I am
feeling so good about myself. I am making the right food choices and thinking about what I
put into my body and it is working.

This is the first time I have been able to not cheat with this program as I want to achieve my
goal, which is 5 more lbs to lose and I will be what I weighed in high school. Now that deserves an applause! 👍 Congratulations to me, the Shaklee Healthy Cleanse works and I am living proof, an 80+ woman who is talented, loves herself, and wants to empower people to do what she is doing, getting healthy and staying healthy. Do you know anyone who needs to be empowered?
IS IT JUST STRESS....OR IS IT MORE???

With our complex lives in the 21st century, more and more people are suffering from stress-related conditions. The negative impact of stress can affect many areas of health. One area in particular that can be adversely affected is the adrenal glands.

When you experience stress over a long period of time, the adrenals weaken, negatively affecting the body and resulting in adrenal fatigue. What are some of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue? Here are a few: Excessive, unexplained tiredness, craving for salty or sugary foods, difficulty in handling stress, more infections, etc. These are just a few.

The best diet for your adrenals.....Lots of water, pumpkin seeds, sardines, liver, grass-fed meat, wild game and wild caught salmon, non-starchy vegetables, clarified butter, coconut oil, coconut water, avocados, olives, lean, organic chicken and turkey, walnuts, almonds, and chia and flax seeds.

The adrenals can affect your thyroid. Constant stress and anxiety influences your body's metabolism and unhappy and unhealthy adrenal glands can cause you to metabolize food improperly. This can lead to hypothyroidism, slowing down of your metabolism. Some of the healthy conditions that can occur are:

Fatigue and weakness, memory loss, muscle cramps, aches and pains, hair loss, weight gain or inability to lose weight, coarse, dry, prematurely aged hair and skin. These are just a few of the symptoms.

Some of the supplements that can help your adrenals are B-complex, Vitamin D3, Zinc, Vita-E complex and also VitalMag. If you don't eat foods rich in healthy, fatty acids, add Omega Guard.
These supplements are Shaklee supplements, guaranteed to work with clinical studies behind them.
WHO'S UP FOR SOME WELL NEEDED REST?

Do you ever rest from technology? Have you ever rested from your phone or TV or other forms of media? Read what Andy Crouch, author of "The Tech-Wise Family". Good advice on how to cultivate rest in the lives of yourself and your family.

"Well, I'll tell you the one thing that people seem to find most helpful. A simple principle is our devices are not always being on. I recommend a rhythm of at least one hour a day, one day a week, and one week a year, the whole family being free from anything that glows, and as much as possible from other forms of technology as well. Our family has a day a week largely free. Our "hour a day" is around dinnertime for us -- for families with smaller children, bedtime may make the most sense. And I think it is important to have a week or more a year that is technology-free. Not every family has the means or opportunity to take a week vacation, but many do, and to Harriethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16739696027972933786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-58626298602616953.post-77319877433735002762019-03-10T11:21:00.002-07:002019-03-10T11:29:18.155-07:00

BEYOND ORGANIC.......A SHAKLEE STANDARD!!

Shaklee screens for over 350 contaminants, pesticides, and impurities on every new botanical, 3 times more than U.S. Pharmacopeia standards.

Shaklee also performs over 100,000 quality tests per year to ensure that their products are pure. People ask "Are Shaklee products Organic?" Shaklee's working philosophy is something much, much better.....Beyond Organic...a philosophy that Shaklee quality standards go beyond how and where an ingredient is grown. Shaklee confirms the purity and potency of ingredients AFTER harvest to guarantee that the final finished product is FREE of hundreds of chemical contaminants.

You may be asking "WHY"does Shaklee go "Beyond Organic"? While Shaklee encourages all consumers to purchase organic produce and ingredients, it is important to remember that organic is a means of production; not a guarantee that the food is clean and free of chemical contaminants, pesticides and herbicides....even when safely applied...can run off into unintended areas and farmland.

That is why Shaklee's approach is to work with the finest suppliers and to go ABOVE AND BEYOND to verify the safety, purity and potency of the ingredients they use..after harvest.

Your safety and your family's safety is Shaklee's highest concern. And their BEYOND ORGANIC program guarantees the highest standards of safety.

Now when someone asks about organic standards, you'll be able to say, "LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT SHAKLEE'S BEYOND ORGANIC Program."Harriethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16739696027972933786noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-58626298602616953.post-14451983807324073462018-07-31T07:47:00.000-07:002018-07-31T07:51:23.018-07:00I AM A GIFT......

I am a gift, no matter what age, no matter what I look,
there's beauty in each stage.

I am a gift, and I promise every day,
when I look in the mirror I'll say, "I am a gift."

I am a gift, I've loved really well,
and every year I've lived has a different tale to tell.

I've made mistakes, have some regrets.

But I promise I'll never forget I am a gift.

There may be times when I forget the truth about me.

When it seems time and youth are just marching on without me.

That's when I might need you to find me, and ever so gently remind me that.

I am a gift, a precious child,
I'm put here on this earth but only for awhile.

So I make this vow and I say it with love,

"I am perfect and whole and enough, and
I am a gift."
KEEP CALM: 10 MINUTES TO RELAXATION.

Breathing works to still your mind by hacking your body-brain systems. When you feel relaxed, your breathing slows down. Recent studies support the use of breathing to relax and calm the mind.

One technique to help you:

The easiest is called 2-1-4:

Find a place where you can be alone and comfortable

Close your eyes and feel your body relaxing

Inhale for two seconds

Hold your breath for one second

Exhale for four seconds.

Pay particular attention to the out breath. Repeat this pattern for 5-10 minutes.

Hope this will help you to relax and remain calm. Harriet www.healthyhabitstoday.net
LOWER YOU RISK FOR ALZHEIMER'S

Parade Magazine article on steps to reduce risk of Alzheimer's:

Know your numbers - get basic blood tests, learn your blood pressure, and body mass index.

Take a cognitive test - one you can take at home, 15 minute SAGE test (for a link, go to alzu.org)

Hang on to your muscle - we lose 1% of muscle mass a year if we don't do anything about it. Mix aerobic and resistance/weight training helps burn fat.

Maintain a healthy weight - there may be no such thing as "fat but fit," recent studies say.

Eat "green, lean and clean." - Almost every brain benefits from a plant-heavy diet (veggies, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds) with lean protein (fish, especially) and low fat dairy. Grass-fed dairy and meat have less fat. Use extra-virgin olive oil for everything.

Go fishing - Brain food. Fatty fish twice a week includes salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, lake trout and sardines. Omega-3 supplements with DHA and EPA may be a benefit.

Pass on late-night eating -at least 8 hours of sleep. Stop texting, checking email and watching TV 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime. You will sleep better.

Balance stress with downtime - every 4.5 years of work stress lead to one additional year of brain aging. Yoga, acupuncture, and regular vacations all help.

Keep busy and connected - Hobbies and friendships both relax and challenge the brain to learn new things. Social contact protects it. Word on cross words and brain games is mixed--remember there is no one magic bullet.

Visit the dentist and the eye doctor-Untreated dental problems can cause problematic inflammation. Vision or hearing loss can lead to social isolation.

Take up the ukulele-Music's benefits to the brain helps. Listening revs you up for exercise and calms stress, but playing or singing is even better.

Don't smoke-you knew that.

Consider genetic testing - It won't tell you whether you'll get the disease as only a few genes have been linked to Alzheimer's so far. Best studied is APOE which helps regulate fats.

Join a clinical trial - Early intervention research is our best chance to cure the disease, says Harvard neurologist Reisa A. Sperling. The first person cured of Alzheimer's disease will be in a clinical trial. Search for studies at clinicaltrials.gov

Go to Alzu.org to take an Alzheimer's course, find links to the SAGE cognitive test.
HOW EXPENSIVE CAN A SALAD BE???

Do you know there is a world where people pay almost $50 a pound for tiny lettuces. They assemble religiously in the crowded northwest corner of Manhattan's Union Square Greenmarket, where the eerily perfect Windfall Farms stall appears on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Vegetables are treated with the care one sees in a Madison Ave. boutique. Signs caution customers against touching the greens, because they've already been hand-washed several times.

Most of the baby greens-the baby mesclun mix, the wasabi-like green wave mustard--cost $12 for 4 oz. or $48 a pound. Red Amaranth sprouts are the priciest, at $64 a pound.

Windfall is exponentially more expensive than its competitors. Windfall's owner, Morse Pitts, estimates that 2/3 of his customers are home cooks who've sampled other options at the market, and know that his are distinctly flavorful.

"Windfall greens are the tastiest, they are also perfect," says Jeremiah Stone, who co-owns the popular tasting menu spot Contra and wine bar Wildair. " The prices seem insane, but actually most of the product is really light, so you get a lot. Other farmers make fun of Windfall--there produce is so precious and clean--but then they'll sell you carrots with lots of dirt on them and still charge you a lot."

Windfall's freshness and cleanliness raise its cost and good seeds are expensive. We try to pay people $15 an hour, says owner Pitt. It is a struggle to get to $15 but it is because it is labor intensive. Having to pull weeds by hand and examine them closely. Greens are carefully and individually hand-cut. You have to cut them right at the stem or the leaves rot.

You can use these ingredients as flavor accents without breaking the budget. Even Jeremiah Stone will stop short of buying Windfall's micro mesclun salad, which is also $48 a pound, too expensive for a garnish. Customers pay no attention to it, he says. They push it out of the way or eat it without thinking. It's not worth it to our bottom line."

Now this is something to think about when you chomp into that big salad. Could you be eating $48 a pound mesclun salad? Well, maybe not! (Article in Bloomberg Pursuits June 19, 2017)

Detoxing is the all the rage today...and with good reason:

Fatigue is the number one complaint doctors hear from their patients.

One in three American adults are pre-diabetic...and only 10% are aware that they're at risk.

Autoimmune diseases such rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease affect up to 50 million Americans. Because there is no curative therapy at this time, treatment for autoimmune diseases focuses on relieving symptoms.

More than 30% of population suffer from insomnia and approximately 10 million people in the U.S. use prescription sleep aids. People who suffer from sleep deprivation are 27% more likely to become overweight or obese.

Dr. Herbert Needleman, MD and Dr. Philip Landrigan, MD in "Raising Children Toxic Free" stated, "Since 1950, at least 70,000 new chemical compounds have been invented and dispersed into our ENVIRONMENT. Only a fraction of these have been tested for human toxicity. We are, by default, conducting a massive clinical toxicology trial, and we, our children and their children are the experimental animals."

So...what do all of these dire statistics have to do with DETOXING? EVERYTHING!
EVALUATING ALTERNATIVES TO DAIRY!

There are so many milk alternatives that all of us should be aware of especially, the protein and calcium that are in these non-dairy milks.

Almond milk - is low in fat and you can even make it at home. Silk Organic Almond Original contains 60 calories, one gram of protein, 10 daily value for calcium and 2-1/2 grams of fat and 8 grams of carbs. Almond milk is neither high in protein nor calcium.

Coconut milk - Native Forest Unsweetened Coconut Milk contains 420 calories, 3 grams of protein, and 45 grams of fat. Does contain trace minerals and no calcium. Coconut milk is high in fat and calories and not best choice to drink every day, better in Asian-style soups and curries.

Rice milk - is least likely to trigger an allergy. One cup of Rice Dream Milk has 120 calories, one gram of protein, 30 percent DV for calcium, 2.5 grams of fat and 23 grams of carbs.
Again, low in fat and protein, high in carbs.

Soy milk - provides more protein than other alternative milks. Organic Edensoy Extra Original Soymilk contains 130 calories, with 11 grams of protein, 20 percent DV for calcium and 4 grams of fat and 13 grams of carbs. Use a non-GMO product.

The above information came from the May 2017 issue of Natural Awakenings article by Judith Fertig. Thank you Ms. Fertig.

I have found only one milk, FairLife, that is ultra-filtered and has 13 grams of protein, 375 mg. of calcium, no lactose and have high milk standards. Their website is fairlife.com for more information about their farms. I do use the non-fat type of milk.
POWER OF SIMPLICITY (continued)

3. IDENTIFY THE HIGHER YES - Once you are clear about your purpose and your identity and what you value, you have to put a firewall around them. One of the best practices is to learn to say "No". This can lead to greater simplicity in our lives. Part of our challenge is that we want to do it all. We can do almost anything we want, but we just can't do everything we want.

Every "No" needs to be rooted in a higher "Yes." The higher "Yes" is your purpose, your values, your core talents and you replenishment cycle. The "must do's" of your life.

Saying no to watching Jimmy Fallon could be rooted in the yes of getting up early to exercise the next morning.

Saying no to a business dinner could be rooted in the higher yes of being at your kid's soccer games.

Saying no to a requested meeting could be rooted in the higher yes of needing "think time".

Hans Hoffmann said, "The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak."

Here is my equation for simplicity and note that the order is important"

Clarity + Courage + Calendar = Simplicity

1. Clarity = what matters to you. What are the things you really value? What are the "must do's" of your life?
2. Courage = the resolve to make change. Will you have the resolve and discipline to recalibrate your life around that which is most important to you? It takes courage to eliminate the nonessential.

Questions to ask: Are you overextended? Are you spending time and energy on something that's not a core value or priority? Are you doing things simply because it is an expectation from others? What do you sense you need to stop doing?

3. Calendar = the discipline to execute.
Your calendar will help you become who you want to become. You calendar can be a bit like a junk drawer. It can get filled with all sorts of random things that clutter your life.

Let me encourage you to find some time to get alone and reflect on this question: What would it take for me to move toward a life of greater SIMPLICITY???
